Who’d be a goalkeeper?
Poor Peter Jeffries had a torrid 45 minutes in front of the Birmingham supporters during yesterday’s 3-2 FA Cup defeat but the Blyth number one stood up to it.
The Spartans stopper had to listen to all sorts of profanities from the hostile away crowd who hit him with endless abuse that didn’t exactly look out for a PG warning anywhere in sight and, although Jeffries looked visibly annoyed at a stage, he never let the taunting get on top of him.
Jeffries isn’t exactly there to be shot at: he’s an EvoStik league player, he’s not earning money for playing and he’s hardly the Mr Blobby the Birmingham fans would have you believe he is. But he took it all well, considering.
Eventually, the goalie acknowledged the crowd’s efforts at the full time whistle and came back to applaud his attackers who returned the gesture of sportsmanship. All’s fair in love and war and all that. Many a man couldn’t have withstood this but good to see both parties took it as banter.
Fair play to @peter_jeffries Blyth keeper took a load of stick in the second half then clapped us at full time good luck in the future!
