So that’s why they call it the Derby of Eternal Enemies…
Panathinaikos beat their Athens rivals Olympiakos 2-1 last night, but this one won’t be remembered for the football.
The game started 15 minutes later then scheduled, after a fair number of Panathinaikos fans stormed the pitch to attack the Olympiakos players as they warmed up, throwing chairs, flares, fireworks and basically anything they could get their hands on.
Olympiakos coach Vítor Pereira was hit with a chair during the attack, while in the second half their midfielder was struck on the shoulder by a flare thrown from the stands.
They managed to get the fans off the pitch, and the game started with a 15 minute delay, but only after this absolute spine-tingling and terrifying scene created by the home fans who were positioned behind the goal, in the appropriately named “WARZONE”.
Amid all the intimidating noise and colour, have a listen for the absolutely bizarre music playing over the stadium’s public address system.
More than a bit out of place.
