Frank Lampard had an incredible goal record for his former club Chelsea.
The Blues’ record goalscorer fired in 211 goals, but while everyone probably thought he would be banging them in from the off at New York City FC in a side with David Villa and Andrea Pirlo, it took him a few games to get off the mark.
And when he finally did, it was a former League of Ireland goalkeeper who had the honour of watching the ball go past him.
Chris Konopka, formely of Bohemians, Sporting Fingal and Waterford United, was in goal for Toronto FC as Lampard netted the second in a 2-0 win for NYC.
It was a familiar Lampard effort, too. He was hovering around the edge of the box and when the ball came to him, he made no mistake – controlling it, before placing it right in the bottom corner, out of the reach of Konopka, an unused substitute in Bohs’ and Fingal’s FAI Cup final wins in 2008 and 2009.
It was a lovely finish from Lampard, but just look at that ball over the top from Pirlo. That’s a ball you could make sweet, sweet love to.
Welcome Frank Lampard. #NYCvTORhttps://t.co/X9RdM8I2BC
