Manchester United have signed former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes on an 18-month deal.

The Spaniard has been training with United as he recovered from a serious injury sustained during his final season at the Nou Camp but Louis van Gaal has clearly seen enough and feels the 32-year-old is worth signing up.

Valdes will be back up to David de Gea but with rumours of an impending bid from Real Madrid for the standout player in the United team this season, Van Gaal will surely feel that Valdes provides solid cover should De Gea decide that his future is best served back in his native Madrid.

‘It is a real honour to sign for Manchester United,’ Valdes said.

‘I would like to thank Louis van Gaal and the club for allowing me to do my rehabilitation and to train with the team.

‘From my short time here I can already see this is a very special club. I worked with Louis van Gaal during my time at Barcelona and to have the opportunity to work with him here at Manchester United is a dream come true.’

This evening Valdes has given his first on-tape interview and has revealed that his new club were a huge support to him while he was recovering from a cruciate knee injury having been at Carrington since October completing his recovery.

He also goes on to say that he thinks David de Gea is the best goalkeeper in the world:
