Valencia interest in Matteo Darmian should be music to Man Utd fans’ ears

He has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford

He has hardly featured this season.

When he arrived in 2015, Matteo Darmian appeared to be a shrewd signing at first, after he impressed on his debut against Tottenham.

However, since then, he has lost his spot at on the right of United’s defence to Antonio Valencia, who has shown great innovation in reinventing himself from a winger into a full-back.

Darmian has still played the odd game, usually at left-back where he is also comfortable, but does not offer the dynamism necessary to play at full-back for one of the best teams in the country.

United fans have wanted the club to sell him for a while now, unconvinced by his ability to play any sort of role for them.

And they might be about to have their wish granted, as Valencia CF are reportedly showing interest. According to Super Deporte, the Valencian region’s sports newspaper, Valencia are looking to sign two new right-backs.

Having sold João Cancelo to Inter last summer, the Spanish club’s only orthodox right-back option is former Barcelona player Martín Montoya.

Super Deporte’s report suggests that Valencia’s first choice is Porto’s 19-year-old talent Diogo Dalot, considered to be the ‘new Cancelo’. It also reports that Marcelino’s side are also interested in signing a more experienced right-back, who could be Matteo Darmian.
