UEFA are actually considering creating an even less important competition than the Europa League

Really?

Ben Kiely

You know what European club football needs?

Probably not this anyway.

European football leaders discussed the genuine possibility of creating a third European club competition, Associated Press reports.

54 UEFA members congregated in Malta on Wednesday, to weigh up the pros and cons of a new tournament for teams that get booted out of the qualifying rounds of the Europa League.

The discussions are at an early phase, and any changes to the current European club competition structure would not be introduced until the current round of TV rights deals expire in 2018.

The tournament could be completed by the end of the calendar year, as opposed to running until the end of of the European season like the Champions League and Europa League.

“We are really supportive of this,” said Volodymyr Geninson, executive director at the Football Federation of Ukraine.

Someone has to be, I suppose.
