Turkish giants Galatasaray have been suspended from European competition for a year for breaching financial fair play rules.
Should they qualify for next year’s Champions League or Europa League, the club will not be permitted to take part, UEFA confirmed.
The announcement comes after Europe’s football governing body confirmed in January that Galatasaray had broken regulations on the level of financial losses allowed.
Galatasaray are the reigning champions of Turkey, although they currently sit in fifth position in the Süper Lig table. If they were to finish the season in that position, they would miss out on qualifying for any European football regardless of any imposed bans.
Iskender Baydar, a club official, said Galatasaray’s directors are “examining the text of the decision” and will issue a statement later.
