Transfers: Manchester United turn to Seamus Coleman to solve right-back problem

Missed out on Clyne and Alves

He may have been the best solution all along

Manchester United are ready to lodge a £15million bid for Republic of Ireland defender Seamus Coleman as Louis van Gaal continues his search for a reliable option at right-back.

Everton are expected to hold for closer to £20million for the 26-year-old, who has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in previous transfer windows but is contracted to the Toffees until 2019.

Van Gaal has already lost out on two possible targets after Dani Alves signed a new contract at Barcelona and Nathaniel Clyne opted to join Liverpool, but there will be many who believe Coleman to be best option of the three for United and therefore hardly a consolation prize.

United are in desperate need at the position after watching winger Antonio Valencia fill in for most of last season, while the manager has little to no confidence in Rafael da Silva.

– United have been told to get their arses in gear if they want to sign Southampton midfield man Morgan Schneiderlin. The Saints are resigned to losing the France international this summer, with Arsenal or United his preferred destinations, and have placed a £24million price tag on the 25-year-old.

Van Gaal, however, is thought to be stalling in the hope of instead capturing Germany veteran Bastian Schweinsteiger from Bayern Munich, but Southampton want any deal for Schneiderlin tied up this week so they do not miss out on their number one replacement target, Jordy Clasie of Feyenoord. – Real Madrid are demanding a fee in excess of £60million for Sergio Ramos after rejecting a second United bid of £35.4million for the Spain defender. The brinkmanship between the two clubs is set to continue as United are holding out for a fee of £32million for Real target David de Gea. (Independent)

– Finally, United are reportedly (and we use that term loosely in this case) set to offer Angel di Maria to PSG in exchange for forward Edinson Cavani. (Daily Star)
