Transfers: Manchester United jump to the head of queue for Benteke

But De Gea's agreed a deal with Real Madrid

Manchester United are once again set to be the most active club in this summer’s transfer window as Louis van Gaal continues to remodel the Red Devils for their expected return to the Champions League

And with Robin van Persie likely to depart and Falcao also primed for a swift ushering out the tradesman’s entrance at Old Trafford, a big-ticket striker will be high on LVG’s to-do list.

It’s also no surprise, really, that Christian Benteke’s name would feature highly on that list after the Belgian’s excellent form for Aston Villa over the past month. The 24-year-old would likely have left Villa last summer but for a serious injury, and he has finally shown he is back to his best with nine goals in his past eight games. Benteke will have plenty of suitors but if Van Gaal comes up with the reported £25million offer he’ll likely be a United player. (Daily Star Sunday)

It also looks like United’s improved Champions League prospects have won over Angel di Maria, who is convinced his future again lies at Old Trafford. The Argentina star has reportedly told club higher-ups that he wants to stay for at least another season. (Mirror)

But David de Gea is not for turning, it appears, with a deal already struck between the goalkeeper and Real Madrid. Spanish journalist Josep Pedrerol has claimed: ‘David de Gea is clear… he wants to be the Real Madrid goalkeeper. Only an agreement between the clubs is lacking.’ (JOE.ie)

Away from Manchester, Tottenham are eyeing up Everton forward Kevin Mirallas as one of their top summer targets. The Belgian has fallen out of favour on Merseyside, and is being kept out of Roberto Martinez’s team by on-loan Spurs winger Aaron Lennon, so the Londoners are planning to use Lennon as a makeweight in a £15million offer for Mirallas. Martin Skrtel has been Liverpool’s best defender this season, but Brendan Rodgers has decided to cash in on the Slovakia defender rather than let his contract run out in 2016. The 30-year-old centre half has often been linked to clubs in Germany and Wolfsburg would lead the chase if he becomes available. Swansea’s Ashley Williams would be the favourite to replace Skrtel in Rodgers’ defence. (Mirror)
