Transfer talk: Raheem Sterling’s agent claims request for move ‘blown out of proportion’

Welcome to saga city

A non-denial denial

Welcome to the empty wasteland of the transfer window saga, coming to you ahead of schedule from the people who brought you Raheem Sterling’s Contract Saga.

Yep, last night’s revelation that the Liverpool forward was about to slap in a transfer request has officially kickstarted what seems likely to be the dominant story of the transfer window, at least until someone mentions Gareth Bale’s name again.

This morning has seen a statement from Sterling’s agent, Aidy Ward, which insists that the reports have been ‘blown out of proportion’. Wait, no, it actually says ‘somewhat blown out of proportion’, and that ‘Raheem and his representatives have a meeting scheduled with Liverpool later this week, and we will take proceedings from there’. That certainly puts an end to the speculation then.

Manchester City would appear to be leading the chase for the 20-year-old, but that might not be the only bit of business between the clubs this summer. Liverpool remain in the hunt for out-of-contract midfielder James Milner, who has rejected a £165,000 a week offer to stay at the Etihad. Arsenal are also monitoring the England man and the lure of the Champions League could sway his decision. (Daily Star)

With a new striker high on the list of priorities for Brendan Rodgers, both Edin Dzeko and Stefan Jovetic have been linked to the Merseysiders. Bosnian forward Dzeko has a proven Premier League pedigree but at 29 and at a cost of more than £20million would appear to go against Liverpool’s transfer policy. (Mail)

Petr Cech’s Chelsea career is almost certainly over after Jose Mourinho admitted he cannot stop the Czech Republic goalkeeper from moving on in search of first-team football. Manchester United and Arsenal are potential destinations, with the 32-year-old still having plenty to offer at the highest level. (Mirror)

With their Premier League future secured, Aston Villa are beginning the task of fortifying their squad for next season, with Scott Sinclair expected to make his loan move from Manchester City permanent. (Express)
