Transfer talk: Liverpool set to make World Cup winner their number one target

United chasing another striker

Conan Doherty

We know what you’re thinking: ‘so what? Kleberson won a World Cup for God’s sake.’  But this actually could be good.

Talk last night is that Liverpool are ready to launch a bid of around €30 million for Chelsea and Germany star Andre Shurrle.  The Daily Express are reporting that the bit-part Stamford Bridge attacker is looking for more regular football and, unless he’s unable to muscle Markovic out of the way, he could get that at Anfield.  If Mourinho had any gumption though, he would just point to the Andy Carroll transfer fee and shout, “SHOW ME THE MONEY!”  (Well, the Carroll one and the Markovic one, the Balotelli one etc. etc. etc. etc.)

Finally, as the penny seems to be dropping with Arsene Wenger and Arsenal’s dire need for a bit more steel in the form of a new centre half and a defensive midfielder, the Londoners are ready to lure Lars Bender to the club (Daily Express).  The only sticking point now though for Wenger is that the Bayer Leverkusen enforcer is already established, it would be a necessary signing, and it would make way too much sense.

Manchester United meanwhile are said to be after Brazilian striker, Douglas Coutinho (Daily Mail).  The 20-year-old is relatively unproven when compared to van Gaal’s current attacking roster but, let’s face it, he’s Brazilian.  For once United fans will be glad they’re not chasing a defender in this market.

The Daily Mirror are reporting that Tottenham Hotspur boss, Mauricio Pochettino, will give chase to his old Southampton player, Jay Rodriguez.  The only problem is that he must offload Emmanuel Adebayor to finance the purchase.  Someone who will buy Emmanuel Adebayor?  Just waiting for a pig to fly here.  (Or, you know, a phone call from Brendan Rogers)
