Leicester fans are going to enjoy this.
Claudio Ranieri may be on a plane home from lunch with his mother in Rome, but pretty much everyone else connected with the club will be glued to Tottenham’s trip to Stamford Bridge Monday night.
Anything less than a win for Spurs will see Leicester crowned league champions for the first time in their 132-year history.
If you are the type of Foxes fan who puts a lot of stock in omens and/or statistics then crack out the bunting because the most unlikely Premier League triumph in history is in the bag.
Tottenham’s record away to their London rivals is abysmal. So abysmal that the last Spurs player to score the winner away to Chelsea was Gary Lineker.
In 1990.
Lineker, of course, is the world’s most famous Leicester fan, and has already vowed to present the first episode of Match of Day next season in his underwear if the Foxes lift the trophy.
Considering the long-retired former Leicester, Everton and Barcelona (and Grampus Eight!) striker was the last Spurs player to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge over a quarter-of-a-century ago, it’s looking more and more likely we are going to see more of Lineker than perhaps we want come August.
Since that 2-1 win in February 1990, Spurs have lost 19 and drawn 10 games in all competitions away to Chelsea. A record that is sure to please Lineker and all other Leicester City fans.
