Watch: MLS midfielder eligible to play for Ireland scores stunning 30-yard goal

Take a bow, Tommy McNamara...

Robert Redmond

What a strike.

If you’re like us, you’re sceptical about the standards in MLS. Ageing attacking players can go from looking like Hans Moleman in elite European leagues to Lionel Messi in America’s top division.

The defending is generally a few levels below what fans see in Europe, and no match for the designated, elite attacking players in the league.

However, a good strike is a good strike in any league, and this effort from Tommy McNamara is good enough to grace any stage in football.

The New York City midfielder, a native of the city who’s eligible to play for the Republic of Ireland, was playing in the “Hudson derby” on Sunday afternoon against New York Red Bulls.

His team lost 4-1, but McNamara hit an impressive consolation strike. The 25-year-old picked up the ball 30 yards from goal and let fly, punishing the Red Bulls for failing to close him down, and watched his shot soar into the top corner.

McNamara holds an Irish passport, as his grandfather was born in Ireland, and has claimed in the past that he would be open to representing the Boys in Green or the United States.

Keep scoring goals like this Tommy, and we’ll talk.
