Jose Mourinho may have labelled today’s defeat ‘fake’, but these stats make for bad reading.
Chelsea’s rocky start to their title defence continued as they lost 3-0 away to rivals Manchester City.
After a week of negative publicity, following the removal of two medical personnel from the team bench, the Premier League champions are still searching for their first win, and questions about the future of John Terry is likely to be a talking point for the coming week.
The Chelsea captain was withdrawn at half-time, and, with John Stones a potential arrival at Stamford Bridge, it could be argued today’s game could make the beginning of the end of the 34 year old’s career as a automatic starter.
City also moved five points ahead of their title rivals, and the defeat marked produced a number of unpleasant statistics for Mourinho and Chelsea.
- It was Mourinho’s joint-heaviest Premier League defeat. (The others were a 3-0 loss at Middlesbrough in 2005-06 and a 3-0 defeat at West Brom last season)
- Chelsea didn’t have a shot on target until the 70th minute.
- It was the first time Jose Mourinho has ever subbed off John Terry in a Premier League match.
- It was the first time Chelsea have conceded more than once in Manchester in the Premier League under Mourinho.
- Mourinho has now lost the same number of games in his second spell as Chelsea boss, as during his first stint in charge. Chelsea have lost 10 in 78 games since Mourinho returned in 2013, and lost 10 in 120 under him between 2004 and 2007.
Mourinho also said his side were the better team in the second half, however, these stats would suggest otherwise.
