Army bomb disposal squad called to Old Trafford for ‘controlled explosion’

Nooruddean Choudry

Updates seem to suggest that the security threat at Old Trafford isn’t mere precaution.

Shortly after the stadium was evacuated of fans and Manchester United’s home game with Bournemouth abandoned, the staff and journalists in the vicinity of the ground were also told to leave.

The latest update is that the ‘suspect package’ that was found the stadium’s NW quadrant, and caused the ‘code red’ security alert, may now have to be destroyed in a controlled explosion by the army.

That’s the information of well-sourced and highly respected journalist Andy Mitten, who edits the United We Stand fanzine. His tweet from the ground read:

‘Told by reliable sources that bomb squad in attendance at OT. Relates to mobile phone device. Might have to carry out controlled explosion.’

This was followed up by the Manchester Evening News’ crime correspondent tweeted the following:

‘Old Trafford evacuation: I’m told army bomb disposal squad has been scrambled’

We will of course keep you updated on developments at the ground.
