Unsurprisingly, the PFA Team of the Year contains some controversial calls

The PFA Team of the Year for the 2017/18 season has been named, and unsurprisingly there are some controversial inclusions.

The team dominated by Manchester City players, after Pep Guardiola’s side wrapped up the Premier League title in great style. City have five players in the side, Tottenham Hotspur have three players included and there is one player each from Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea.

Here’s the team in full:

There will be no arguments about David de Gea’s inclusion. The Manchester United goalkeeper has had another brilliant season and is arguably the best player in his position in the world.

However, the selection of Marcos Alonso will raise eyebrows. The Spanish full-back hasn’t impressed during this campaign the way he did last season, and Chelsea have slipped from champions last year to sixth place. Burnley’s James Tarkowski or Ben Mee arguably warranted an inclusion, but the votes went to Jan Vertonghen and Nicolas Otamendi.

Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Christian Eriksen have been voted as the best midfielders in the division this season, and rightly so.

Up front, Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah are included alongside Sergio Aguero. It could be argued that Roberto Firmino warrants a place in the team instead of Aguero, while Raheem Sterling was unlucky not to be included after having the best season of his career so far.

The PFA awards are voted for by the players and will be given out this Sunday. The Player of the Year award is expected to go to either Salah or De Bruyne.
