The debate about how to prounounce Emre Can’s name is over, we have the answer

It must be terribly irritating for foreign players to arrive in England and have the media, fans and even your own teammates butcher your name.

Liverpool supporters, listen up. The man-hours have been put in and we now know how to pronounce the name of your beloved Emre Can.

Let all the bickering over whether it’s Em-ray Kan or Um-reh Chan be put to an end because it’s bloody neither.

Turkish-football have kindly enlightened us buffoons as to how to vocalise his name.

The author of the piece, who is a namesake of the Reds’ versatility player, explains it thusly.

“Emre is a popular Turkish name which means close friend or older brother. Being an Emre myself, I have heard everything from Emray to Henry – even Xray – but the name is actually pronounced, Eh m r eh.”

And as for that tricky surname.

“The Turkish C is pronounced sort of like the J in Jelly. When is comes to Can, think of the Jun sound in Junk and there you have it, Eh-m-r-eh Jun.”

So it is, next week we tackle the baffling Gylfi Sigurðsson.
