One for the future.

AFC Wimbledon defender Ryan Sweeney is on the verge of signing with Stoke City.

The 19-year-old Irish underage international played 10 games in League Two last season as the Kingston outfit won promotion but Mark Hughes has reportedly agreed a £250,000 deal to bring the promising youngster to the Britannia.

According to the Stoke Sentinel, Sweeney looks set to make the move to the Premier League club despite having agreed a new long-term contract last February.

Mounting interest from clubs such as Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United have sprung Stoke into action and AFC Wimbledon have reportedly accepted that they can no longer hold onto the centre half.

Sweeney, a native of Kingston, has featured for the Republic of Ireland under-18 team and will surely be the subject to interest for the under-21s in the near future.
