A man is believed to be “clinically dead” after being thrown in a river during a brawl in Madrid.
Violence marred the build-up to today’s La Liga clash between Atletico Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna with a brawl breaking out before the game.
Supporters of both clubs were said to be involved in a clash that has reportedly left one dead and a further 11 injured, including stab wounds.
Reports in the Spanish media claim that one man, understood to be in his early 30s, had overcome cardiac arrest before entering hospital after he was stabbed and thrown in a river but is also at serious risk of hypothermia and brain trauma.
Home side for the clash at Vicente Calderon, Atletico Madrid quickly denounced the actions.
“Club Atlético de Madrid strongly condemns the incidents in the area of Madrid Río in the hours before our team’s match against Deportivo de La Coruña,” a statement read.
“The values that this sport support should prevail over any rivalry and together we must fight against the scourge of violence.”
