Sunderland’s new signing had a very different view about joining the club back in 2008

"Younes would not join Sunderland - even if there was an earthquake."

Awkward.

“I’m delighted to be a Sunderland player and it’s an honour to join this club,” Younes Kaboul said yesterday, after joining Sunderland from Tottenham Hotspur.

However, the defender’s view of the club has seemingly changed quite a bit in the past seven years.

Back in 2008, Kaboul was linked with a move to the Black Cats, when Roy Keane was manager, until his agent Rudy Raba said: “Younes would not join Sunderland – even if there was an earthquake.”

Kaboul joined Portsmouth instead, before rejoining Spurs and becoming an established member of he squad. However, the French defender lost his place last season and has been allowed leave.

What Kaboul’s agent didn’t mention seven years ago was that the player may be open to a move to Sunderland should he be deemed surplus to requirements at Spurs, they offered him lots of money and guarantee first-team football.

The negotiations between Raba and the club must’ve been awkward though.
