Alright, Steven Gerrard is a legend in his own right, but the greatest of his generation?
Someone might need to explain to Kevin Keegan what a generation is because he’s holding the Liverpool skipper higher than Ronaldo – both Ronaldos – Pirlo, Buffon, Iniesta and the like. And we don’t like it.
Nonetheless, a former king of the Kop was holding back with his praise for the outgoing captain who readies for his final game at Anfield on Saturday.
Keegan was so full of admiration for Stevie that he insisted that the Englishman is the greatest of his time.
“I don’t think there’s any doubt in my mind that Steven Gerrard is the best player of his generation, I gave him his debut for England,” the former Newcastle boss told BeIN Sports. “The sad thing that’s missing on Steven Gerrard’s CV, and I feel so sorry for him that any other time in the previous years if he’d been at Liverpool he would have won an awful lot of trophies.
“And he hasn’t got hardly any for all that he gave Liverpool Football Club and he gave them an awful lot. I think that’s the little part that will be a little bit of a regret for him. He was just there at a time when Liverpool, for whatever reason, just weren’t competitive enough even though they had such a great player, a great leader and I honestly believe, I’m certain in fact, that if he wants to he will manage Liverpool Football Club within 10 years.”
Sure he can always come back and win more trophies with a suit on, couldn’t he?
“He will get that chance. I don’t know whether he’d accept it or not. I’ve never talked to him about it but it will certainly come his way and I think he’d be the perfect guy to manage that club. He knows it inside out. He’s stayed there and he could have moved three or four times.
“He chose to stay. I think the biggest regret is that probably the last season was such a poor ending for a side that everyone felt was going in the right direction so he’ll have some regrets but he’ll walk away with immense pride.”
