People are queuing up to make the same joke about Steven Gerrard and Brendan Rodgers

Congratulations if you've somehow avoided this up to now

Steven Gerrard will be the next Rangers manager, signing a four-year deal which will begin on June 1.

Officially unveiled on Friday, Gerrard was asked during his press conference at Ibrox about the challenge ahead, more specifically how he intended to narrow the gap between Rangers and their Old Firm rivals, Celtic.

“I think it’s important not just to focus on Celtic,” he explained. “We have to focus on everyone in the league but the key is to get our house in order.

“We need to improve the Rangers team and the Rangers squad and make it competitive at the top end of the league. That’s the challenge to me.”

Rangers are currently third in the Scottish Premiership – three points behind Aberdeen but 22 points adrift of Bendan Rodgers’ side, who have already won the title.

While it might seem like a stretch to imagine Gerrard guiding Rangers to the title next season, his appointment has at least given people – lots of people – the opportunity to joke that it wouldn’t be the first time he’d stopped Rodgers from winning a league title if he is successful.

This, not that we need to explain, is a reference to 2014, when Gerrard’s slip in a game against Chelsea contributed to Rodgers’ Liverpool side missing out on the league title.
