Steve Finnan has a brilliant theory on how Liverpool won the 2005 Champions League

Some say Gerrard inspired it, others say AC Milan capitulated, but Steve Finnan says something completely different sparked Liverpool’s phenomenal comeback.

It was the most improbable of outcomes, but somehow Liverpool managed to turn around a three goal deficit at half time to defeat AC Milan and win the 2004/05 Champions League title.

10 years after that memorable game in Istanbul, former Red and Irish international Steve Finnan has weighed in his opinion on how his side pulled it out of the bag.

In his eyes, there was only one man responsible for Liverpool’s impressive  fight back, and his name was… Steve Finnan.

“I always say I changed the game that night.”

“If I hadn’t have got injured, we wouldn’t have won the European Cup.”

“That injury I got was the best thing that ever happened to Liverpool.”

Finnan was taken off with injury and replaced by Didi Hamann at half time, unfortunately, just before the magic happened. At least he has a sense of humour about it.
