Coleman and Doherty start as Stephen Kenny names Ireland team to face Serbia

Niall McIntyre

Here we flippin’ go.

The Ireland team has Seamus Coleman AND Matt Doherty… AND Enda Stevens in it.

Ireland’s road to the 2022 World Cup begins in Belgrade tonight, where Stephen Kenny’s men will take on a star-studded and fancied Serbia side.

A combination of injuries and some poor recent form means that the chips are down for the boys in green and that is reflected in the 5/1 price being quoted on them going into this game.

Despited the depleted deck, Kenny’s side will go into the game with the hope of causing an upset in Serbia, where captain Seamus Coleman returns for his first international appearance in 18 months to captain his country.

Coleman will be followed into battle by an Irish side that includes the experience of Enda Stevens, Matt Doherty and Ciaran Clark, while a number of youngsters such as Aaron Connolly, Mark Travers and Josh Cullen have also been given their chance.

IRELAND XI

Enda Stevens

That leaves veteran campaigners like James McClean, Robbie Brady, Shane Long and Shane Duffy all in reserve.

The game kicks off at 7.45 Irish time and will be broadcast live on RTE 2 and Sky Sports.
