There won’t be a Niall Quinn reference in sight when people see this statue of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Unlike a certain World Player of the Year, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has a statue he can be proud of.
The running joke on Twitter in the last week or so is that you should never court any kind of fame, lest someone sculpt an absolutely terrible bronze statue in your name.
Like the time Cristiano Ronaldo was made to look like Niall Quinn…
or the time Irish broadcasting legend Terry Wogan was made to look like… well… someone who definitely is NOT the late Terry Wogan…

or how about this effigy depicting the athlete Sonia O’Sullivan? It’s interesting, but it bears no resemblance to the Cork runner.
The Wogan statue is – indeed – awful. But surely the guy who did the Sonia O'Sullivan one actually never saw or met her? pic.twitter.com/HDkmW18ObB

Or how about this? Any ideas?
It’s Alan Shearer, by all accounts, and not John Cena. Could’ve fooled us.
But…
With all of that in mind, it’s strange to see a statue that actually does come resemble its subject.
Step forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who has shared the work in progress that is his own bronze tribute in Sweden.
This is pretty good, we’re sure you’ll agree.
