Spain were knocked out by Russia in the round of 16
Fernando Hierro has stepped down as Spain manager, declining the Spanish FA’s offer to carry on after just four games in charge.
He was appointed just two days before the World Cup started after Julen Lopetegui was sacked amid the controversy of Real Madrid announcing that Lopetegui would become Madrid’s new manager after the tournament.
The Spanish FA’s anger led them to fire Lopetegui in a knee-jerk reaction and hire Hierro, who was previously director of football.
He stuck with the same game plan that had got Spain to the World Cup but was ultimately unsuccessful as Spain were knocked out in the second round to Russia on penalties.
