Southampton have dismissed Claude Puel

Paul Moore

The Saints finished in eighth position and reached the League Cup final.

And, still, Southampton Football Club have terminated the contract of Claude Puel with immediate effect.

After a fantastic league campaign, Puel is out – perhaps the argument being that they ended up two places and 17 points worse off than their placing in Ronald Koeman’s final season at St Mary’s. Under the Dutchman, Southampton registered their highest ever Premier League finish.

The club released a short statement that read:

“Everyone at Southampton would like to express our thanks to Claude for his hard work and commitment this year.

“The highlight of the season was a memorable day at Wembley in the EFL Cup Final, a day our fans will always treasure. We wish Claude well for the future. The search for a new management team is underway.

“We are confident that we will find the right fit in line with the long term vision of the club.”

Puel joined from Nice to replace Koeman after the Dutch manager moved to Everton.
