He’s tried bargaining, he’s now in denial.
Raheem Sterling’s agent Aidy Ward may have said Liverpool haven’t a hope in hell of keeping Raheem Sterling this summer, but it seems Brendan Rodgers didn’t get the memo.
Ward was quoted yesterday as saying no money in the world could keep the England international at the club, stating categorically that the player wanted to leave.
“He is definitely not signing. He’s not signing for £700,000, £800,000, £900,000 a week. He is not signing. My job is to make sure I do the best with them [my clients].
However this morning, at his Friday press conference, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has essentially cupped his hands over his ears and started screaming “Lalalalalalalalalala, I can’t hear you!”, at the journalists, and made some pretty contradictory predictions about the player’s future.
“Raheem has two years left on his deal and I expect him to see that through. For me it’s quite simple.”
Despite the fact that the player’s agent was adamant that the player wouldn’t even re-sign with the club for £900,000 a week, Rodgers seems to think they’ll be continuing contract discussions over the summer. Who wants to break it to him?
“I don’t see Raheem being unhappy. Raheem’s representative made it very clear that he wanted to speak at the end of the season.
“Our concentration is on the last game of the season and I’m sure talks will continue in the summer.”
And even though Liverpool fans booed and heckled the player during the team’s end of season awards night on Tuesday, Rodgers seems convinced that the Liverpool fans will support the player through the dispute.
Rodgers: "Liverpool supporters always back their own players. If he plays any part in the game, Raheem will get the support of our fans."
