He’s hardly had the chance to flap at a cross for Liverpool this year, but Simon Mignolet was given the nod to start for his country on Wednesday night.
Roberto Martinez’s Belgium faced Holland in a friendly in Amsterdam last night, and Loris Karius’ deputy at Anfield managed to leave his mark on Tottenham striker, Roberto Solda Vincent Janssen.
With nearly 14 minutes played, a ball was slung into the Belgian area by Mignolet’s Liverpool teammate, Georginio Wijnaldum.
With Janssen in pursuit, Mignolet managed to get there first -punching the ball clear clear of his area before smashing into the 22-year-old striker.
Ouch. Arjen Robben’s face says it all…
Janssen had to be withdrawn a few minutes after the clash, and Dutch manager Danny Blind revealed after the match that the former AZ Alkmaar player had lost 20 minutes of his memory following the incident.
“Vincent Janssen is going to be a very difficult story,” Blind said, as reported in The Mirror.
“The physician told me it is a concussion. He lost 20 minutes of his memory, and doesn’t know what happened.
“We have to be careful with that and talk it through.”
The game finished 1-1 in the end, and the Dutch will now face Luxembourg in a World Cup Qualifier in Luxembourg City on Sunday. As for Belgium, they host Estonia on the same day.
