It’s unfortunate that we sometimes have to go through the worst days to see the best side of football.
Men, women and children from all corners of Ireland have united to spare whatever they can to help with the fundraising effort towards Ryan McBride’s family.
In what is a touching GoFundMe page, hundreds of people are donating money at a time of real tragedy.
“In celebration and memory of Ryan McBride, the funds raised here will go towards covering the costs of his funeral.”
After just seven hours, that target is well on the way to being reached as folk from the north and south continue the effort together.
The push has been helped to no end by Republic of Ireland international Shane Duffy’s unbelievable act of generosity. The Derry man felt the loss of his friend as much as anyone and he has shown tremendous class with his moving gesture.

Duffy put £1,000 into the account to help with the costs of Ryan McBride’s funeral and didn’t think anything of it.
It has been an emotional day in his hometown with the players sticking together during their press conference to speak publicly for the first time about the loss of their heroic captain.
Flowers, scarves and jerseys have been laid outside the Brandywell in memory of McBride.
Ryan McBride’s funeral will take place on Thursday at 10am in Derry’s Long Tower Chapel with interment immediately afterwards in the City Cemetery.
