Scott Hogan is unstoppable right now.
The 24-year-old Brentford striker has found the net seven times in his last four games. Hogan is somewhat of a super-sub and has accumulated his tally in just 157 minutes of action. That’s a goal every 22 minutes.
He found the net twice in The Bees’ 5-1 romp over Huddersfield to finish the season in piping hot goalscoring form.
Ireland are not exactly stacked for goalscorers so Hogan’s recent run has seen his name mentioned with Martin O’Neill’s Euro 2016-bound side.
Hogan is eligible to play for Ireland through his grandparents and was called up for our Under-21s in 2014. Playing with Rochdale at the time, his old boss would not let him travel as it clashed with a Friday night league fixture.
The striker has only made seven appearances this season after 18 months after battling back from two anterior cruciate ligament injuries. He is delighted to be finally proving what he is capable of at Brentford.
In an interview with Go West London, Hogan was refusing to get ahead of himself despite queries from Ireland.
“I spoke to [Brentford teammate] Alan Judge a couple of times and he’s had a reporter ring and ask him [about me]. They’ve tried to get in touch with me but I don’t want to consider that.
“There are much more things I’m worried about than declaring what country I can play for. My grandma and granddad are Irish – my late grandfather was as well.
“I’m eligible to play for them but I’m a Brentford player and the last thing I’m thinking of is who I’m going to represent internationally. It’s getting ahead of myself a bit too much.”
Even if Ireland were interested, it seems a stretch that Hogan would form a part of their Euro 2016 squad. That is not to say O’Neill would not call him in for a few training sessions, later this month.
Hogan’s Brentford finish their season with an away trip to Huddersfield on Saturday afternoon. Another goal or two would do his chances no harm at all.
