Peter Schmeichel loved his son’s last-gasp penalty save against Croatia

All for nothing...

Simon Lloyd

This World Cup, eh?

Even when you think it’s dull, something absolutely batshit happens. And that exactly the way things panned out in the last-16 clash between Croatia and Denmark on Sunday night…

Denmark took a lead within the first minute. Croatia levelled before the fifth. It remained this way all the way to penalties.

It wouldn’t have done if not for Kasper Schmeichel. At the very end of extra-time, Ante Rebic was played through by Luka Modric, only for him to be brought down by Mathias Jorgensen. Penalty.

With Denmark staring down the barrel of a World Cup exit, Modric couldn’t find a way through. Schmeichel went the right way and grasped hold of the ball. His dad Peter was in the stands to see it, and clearly enjoyed the moment, too…

Unfortunately for the Schmeichels and the rest of their countrymen, it was all for nothing. Though the Leicester City goalkeeper saved two more spot-kicks in the shootout, Croatia scraped through – Modric one of those to score.
