Euro 2016 is over for Northern Ireland but their most famous chant will live on, echoing around the avenues of France.
“Will Grigg’s on Fire,” took the European Championships by storm this month and, although the Wigan striker hasn’t so much as kicked a ball at the tournament, his name is stuck in the head of almost everyone who’s been paying attention to the competition.
The chant, not only roared by Northern Ireland supporters but embraced by almost all sets of fans in France, has entered the peculiar position where it’s become part of the public consciousness and more than just a song bellowed from the terraces.
And organisations are now even using the homage to Northern Ireland’s cult hero as a means of doing business, namely dealing with customer complaints.
Ryanair took advantage of the catchy hook from Gala’s “Freed from Desire” to give short shrift to an unhappy customer who responded to a lighthearted Will Grigg tweet with a grievance about being overcharged for baggage
Touché indeed.
