“He doesn’t seem to hang around for long.”
Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has raised a major issue about his old club’s latest appointment, despite initial positivity.
The news emerged last week that United are close to snatching Newcastle’s Sporting Director Dan Ashworth, and adding him to their roster in order to help with their transfer business in the future.
It’s no secret that the recruitment at Old Trafford has been a huge problem in recent years, with the club spending huge amounts of money on players who have not lived up to their potential.
Ashworth certainly has a track record of success in this area, earning quick success at both Brighton and Newcastle, despite only being at the clubs for a short period of time.
With this glowing resume, fans are delighted to hear that Ashworth could become the new man in charge of transfers at United, but Keane has some concerns.
“The way Brighton have done it with their recruitment, and Newcastle, recruitment is key,’ Keane told the Stick to Football podcast, brought to you by Sky Bet.
“Manchester United have had many issues over the last few years, but recruitment is probably the No 1 thing they’ve got wrong.
“You’re talking about Dan Ashworth coming into Manchester United and being the best for the job, but he doesn’t seem to hang around for long.

“He was at Brighton for a few years, and he’s only been at Newcastle for a couple of seasons, so you have to look at that too.
“There’s no doubt he’s brilliant at his job, but who is to say he won’t leave in 18 months for Real Madrid or Barcelona.”
For those who think that the irishman is just being pessimistic, he actually raises a valid point as Ashworth has only worked at Newcastle since the summer of 2022 when he jumped ship from Brighton and Hove Albion to work under the club’s new regime under the owner of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
If he were to move club again in such a short period of time, then it would suggest that if a better opportunity arises in the near future, then he could leave The Red Devil’s hanging dry.
