“He won’t fancy that.”
Roy Keane couldn’t resist making a cheeky joke at the Republic of Ireland’s expense after Argentina beat France to win the World Cup.
Following the final in Qatar, which Argentina won on penalties, the ITV panel debated whether France manager Didier Deschamps would walk away from his role.
Zinedine Zidane has been tipped to replace him in time for qualifying for Euro 2024, which begins in March against Ireland in Dublin.
Keane joked that the prospect of facing the Boys in Green may be enough to make Deschamps resign after a decade in charge.
“I think he will be looking at the next few months, they’re playing Ireland in March in Dublin,” Keane said on ITV.
“I think he will be resigning looking at that game – he won’t fancy that.”
Ian Wright was alongside Keane and praised Deschamps’ impact on the France team. Under the manager’s guidance, France won the World Cup in 2018 and reached the finals of the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2016.
“As a player who captained and managed his side to World Cup wins, then just missing out on penalties a second time, I think the water-carrier statement towards him was very disrespectful,” Wright said.
The Arsenal legend was referring to Eric Cantona’s ‘water-carrier’ description of Deschamps from their playing days
“You need those types of players in your team, and we saw what he went on to do,” Wright continued.
“It is going to be very interesting to see, if Zidane comes in, what he can do to replicate that, as it is a magnificent effort from Deschamps.”
