Roy Keane dismissed concerns that Wes Hoolahan would be a doubt for Poland in the most Roy Keane of ways.
The Republic of Ireland midfielder finished the session at the Aviva Stadium this afternoon but looked uncomfortable as he walked back to the changing room with his left boot removed.
Keane, though, couldn’t understand the worries. This is football after all. What else do you expect?
“I think he’s okay,” the national assistant manager said. “When you’re having games and places are up for grabs, players are going to get knocked in training. It’s not chess we’re playing.”
If he is fit, the former Ireland captain can see a role for Hoolahan on Sunday but he doesn’t buy into the notion that Martin O’Neill’s side are favourites against the group leaders.
“We should be winning? That’s easier said than done,” Keane remarked. “It’s a tough game and obviously Wes has done well for us when he has come in, for myself and Martin. Hopefully he’ll have a role to play [on Sunday].
“I’m sure we’ll gauge it over the next few days. The players know that there are places up for grabs and it’s up to them over the next few days to take that opportunity.
“I’m sure, if Wes starts, he won’t let us down. He never has.”
Darron Gibson and James McCarthy didn't train with the team today whilst James McClean also sat out but Keane confirmed that he rates the Wigan winger's chances as "hopeful".
