“When he’s producing like that, you need Ronaldo in your team.”

Roy Keane has said that Manchester United should aim to keep Cristiano Ronaldo at the club next season.

Keane was speaking after Ronaldo scored a stunning hat-trick in the 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

The Portuguese forward became the highest-scoring football in history with his goals in the Premier League tie, taking his tally to 807 career goals.

Ronaldo, 37, is under contract at Old Trafford until the end of next season, but there has been speculation that he may depart in the summer after a difficult season for the club.

While others have suggested Man United would be better off with the former Real Madrid forward in their team.

Keane, however, has said that the player is capable of excelling at the top level for at least another season.

“Games like tonight will help with his decision making,” Keane said on Sky Sports.

“For as great as he is, the next challenge for Ronaldo is to make this United team compete again for league titles. Ronaldo is a huge part of the rebuilding of the club.

“When he’s producing like that, you need Ronaldo in your team.

“Ronaldo has been doing this throughout his career, he’s been doing it for years. I think he can do it for another season.”

Keane also spoke about Ronaldo’s demeanour during the win over Spurs.

The Irishman said that the forward, who missed Man United’s 4-1 defeat to Manchester City last week with a hip injury, looked ‘angry’ during the match.

Keane also called Ronaldo a ‘genius’ after he broke the goalscoring record. “Ronaldo looked angry today, he played with a lot of aggression,” he said.

“He’s obviously upset with whatever happened last week, but he showed today what we have seen over the years. The guy’s a genius, his three goals were fantastic.

“He brings so much to the team, why do people think he cannot bring goals or value?”

“Forget about FIFA, that is a lot of goals. Scoring goals is the hardest part of the game. Some players don’t even score in training!

“What more can you say about him. He’s a genius!”
