Before blasting a hat-trick past Sunderland the other night, Romelu Lukaku had gone through something of a goal drought for Everton.
His strikes on Wearside were his first for his club in over six months and as Ronald Koeman’s side hosted Middlesbrough on Saturday evening, many fancied the Belgian to continue his scoring run.
Just before half-time, with Everton having overcome an Alvaro Negredo opener to lead the visitors 2-1, it seemed Lukaku had got his goal.
Narrowly avoiding offside, it might have appeared in real time that the 23-year-old had nudged Yannick Bolasie’s cross beyond Victor Valdes and into the Middlesbrough net.
Even if you weren’t completely sure at first glance, is this really the look of a man that’s *failed* to make contact with a cross that’s ended up going in anyway?
Nope. *Surely* this was Romelu’s goal.
Unfortunately for Lukaku, this wasn’t the case. Because this is a Premier League game, there were plenty of cameras trained on the ball as it made its way into the Middlesbrough goal – none of which showed the former Chelsea striker getting even the slightest of touches.
This was Bolasie’s goal and Lukaku was trying to have us all on. He might have got away with it 0 years ago, but…
