Romelu Lukaku reckons Belgium have a more talented squad than Manchester United

It was an awkward question to answer

Darragh Murphy

Romelu Lukaku refused to elaborate but at least he answered the question.

Ahead of Belgium’s penultimate warm-up game ahead of the World Cup, Lukaku was asked a tricky question in a press conference. “Is the current Belgium squad better than the Manchester United squad?” a reporter asked.

The United centre-forward couldn’t hide his shock and his initial reaction was absolutely hilarious before he admitted that he felt like his national team is a more talented group than his club side.

Lukaku found the net in Belgium’s 3-0 victory over Egypt on Wednesday night.

The 25-year-old pounced on the rebound following a teammate’s shot to tap in one of the easiest goals of his career, opening the scoring before Eden Hazard and Marouane Fellaini added to the tally at the end of either half.

Lukaku has recently suggested that he is underappreciated by Belgian supporters and claimed that his aim is to simply try to enjoy himself on the pitch.

He said: “Has everything been forgotten and forgiven between me and the public? As far as I am concerned, not yet. One applause in nine years, then it is not forgotten and forgiven.”

Below is Belgium’s official squad list for the upcoming tournament in Russia and it’s easy to understand why many pundits feel like they’ve got an outside chance of going all the way.
