Good news folks, it seems that we may have several years of Robbie Keane still to come.
Ireland’s greatest ever goalscorer (by quite the distance), picked up his third MLS Cup with LA Galaxy last season, and has told Sports Illustrated that while his contract in California is up next year, he has plans to carry on playing until the ripe old age of 40.
Keane was in The White House with his Galaxy teammates for the customary visit to President Obama, and told SI’s Brian Straus that a Christmas break playing some astro, and a bit of football golf (as you do) in Dublin has left him well rested and ready to carry on.
” We played five-a-side twice a week with my friends from when I was a kid, my brother and stuff. I played football golf, which is basically golf with kicking a football, and I just spent time with the family.
“It was certainly a long season and you get reporters asking you questions about what you’re going to be doing and are you going to be here and stuff like that, and all I said was that I wanted to recharge the batteries and see, because I see myself playing for a long time.
“I see myself playing longer than what I have left [on my current contract], which is one year. I see way longer than that – like four or five years – I can see myself playing.”
Robbie is turns 35 during the summer (hard to believe that, right?), his plans for “four or five years” of more ball should be bringing him up to his 40s.
And with the way he’s been banging in the goals across the pond, who could disagree with him?
