RIP Marcos Rojo, destroyed by this Borussia Dortmund goal

Is Rojo short for Roger Johnson?

Tom Victor

Manchester United’s pre-season preparations took a hit when they lost 4-1 to Borussia Dortmund in the International Champions Cup.

Of course, it would be wrong to read too much into friendlies, even when they’ve got such glamorous branding around them, but there are some things you can’t help but notice.

Marcos Rojo came in for criticism from United fans last season, but the arrival of a new manager gave the Argentine an opportunity to start afresh.

The Louis van Gaal signing will have been looking to go back to that impressive season in Portugal before he arrived at Old Trafford – at least that’s our best explanation of why he was caught backtracking two years in five seconds for Ousmane Dembele’s goal.

If Rojo thought he’d be able to brush off that embarrassment and get on with his day/summer/life, he underestimated the vindictive power of that most influential group: internet football fans.

Twitter took no prisoners, taking time out from their cover-all attacks on United to zero in on one player and one player alone. As if we expected any different.

We’re starting to think Rojo isn’t a surname, but just an abbreviation for Roger Johnson. There are certainly some very striking similarities.

Unlucky Rojo. Get some ice on those ankles and get yourself ready for the start of the season eh?
