Life is rarely dull in the world of French international football.
The Euro 2016 hosts have been keeping a pretty low profile, playing some friendlies as they prepare to host next summer’s tournament.
But, in keeping with their long tradition of off-field distractions, AFP are reporting that Karim Benzema was taken into custody Tuesday to be questioned over the alleged blackmailing of Mathieu Valbuena.
The Real Madrid striker follows former Liverpool player Djibril Cisse, who was also questioned by police in relation to allegations that a sextape involving Valbuena is being used to extort money from the Lyon playmaker.
Cisse was released and denied any involvement, saying himself and Valbuena are friends.
Benzema (27) went to a police station in Versailles after 9am this morning, with a source saying: “We can confirm that he is being questioned over his role in this affair.”
The Real star missed Tuesday’s 1-0 win over Paris St Germain through injury but could be named in the France squad for upcoming friendlies, which could make for an interesting atmosphere if Valbuena is also selected by Didier Deschamps for the upcoming friendlies with Germany and England.
