REPORT: Robin van Persie’s international career may be over

Tot ziens

Ben Kiely

If the reports coming from the Netherlands are true, Robin van Persie’s international career will have ended on a very sour note.

Dutch daily Telegraaf are reporting that the former Arsenal and Manchester United striker is being axed from the Netherlands national team, potentially forever.

The Oranje were the big casualties in the Euro 2016 qualifiers by missing out on qualification for next year’s tournament after finishing fourth in Group A behind Czech Republic, Iceland and Turkey.

After the crushing failure of the qualification campaign, coach Danny Blind is set to do a serious overhaul on the squad in a bid to rejuvenate the side, and it looks like RVP’s head could be on the chopping block.

The Telegraaf are claiming Blind doesn’t believe van Persie is “fit enough” for international football.

If his career with the national side is over, it will mean that his impressive 50 goals in 101 games record for Holland will almost certainly be overshadowed by his last contribution for the team…
