Cristiano Ronaldo might not have been able to steal a march on the injured Lionel Messi in the goalscoring stakes, but you couldn’t have asked him to do more.
The Real Madrid star has several weeks to build up a lead over Messi in the lead for the Pichichi Trophy, with the Argentine sidelined by a knee injury.
A match against winless Malaga seemed like the perfect opportunity for the current joint-top scorer in La Liga to move further away from his rival, but while Javi Gracia’s side might be yet to score in six outings, their defensive record isn’t bad.
They say you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take, but for Ronaldo it was also a case of missing 100% of the shots you do take. He went for goal 14 times over the 90 minutes – that’s more than the entire Malaga team.
