He's been linked with a move away

Is this good business?

Cristiano Ronaldo’s future is always a hot topic in football. He has had his annual flirtation with a move away from Real Madrid, with rumours of a potential return to Manchester United surfacing.

Once United signed Sánchez, it became clear that bringing Ronaldo back wasn’t a priority for them and while PSG have Neymar, there are very few potential suitors for Ronaldo.

It now looks like the forward will stay put and Madrid are prepared to give him a huge pay rise, lifting his salary from €21m a year to €30m, according to abc.

Ronaldo would earn close to what PSG pay Neymar, although Lionel Messi will still earn more than both of them. Ronaldo initially wanted an improved contract that would pay him at least the same as Messi, but his performances this season have not come anywhere near justifying that demand.

Real Madrid appear willing to compromise though. They know the player’s stance: he wants to stay at Madrid and earn receive a pay rise. After the season ends they will offer him the improved contract, but it will not be extended beyond 2021, when his current contract runs out.

Madrid may still lose the likes of Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema in the summer as the possibility of a squad overhaul becomes more likely with every point dropped.
