The Madrid faithful have spoken, they want to see some vintage pre-2010 Bale against Atletico Madrid.
Los Blancos’ first choice left-back Marcelo is suspended for the crucial European fixture and the fans want Gareth Bale to take his place in defence.
Marca published an online poll asking their readers who they would prefer to start at left-back against their city rivals and the Bale received an overwhelming majority of the vote. The Welshman received over 50% of the vote, trouncing £20 million full-back who came in second with 37.4%. Nacho and Alvaro Arbeloa came third and fourth respectively.
Bale began his professional career as a left-back for Southampton. He continued playing in this position after his £7 million switch to Spurs in 2007, but struggled to get first team action with Beniot Assou-Ekotto being favoured by Tottenham at the time.
His fortunes changed at the club after making the move to the left wing under Harry Redknapp, which is where he played during his stellar 2012-13 season which earned him the PFA Young Player of the Year accolade.
He signed for Madrid for a whopping €91 million in summer 2013 and has been playing as an attacking player for the club. However, if the fans wishes are granted, he could be making a return to full-back.
