In order for Real Madrid fans to accept Cristiano Ronaldo as captain, three players from the current squad would have to leave the club.
With all the rumours flying around that captain Iker Casillas and vice-captain Sergio Ramos could be set to leave the Bernabeu, the club need a back-up plan.
This transfer gossip inspired Spanish newspaper Marca to ask their readers who they would prefer as captain of Real Madrid, should the duo leave.
Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo came second, securing 38.6% of the overall vote. He was trounced by Brazilian left back Marcelo, who received a whopping 61.4%.
The Real Madrid faithful clearly feel Marcelo’s years of service to the club is enough to earn him the captain’s armband ahead of his Portuguese club mate.Marcelo arrived at the Bernabeu in 2007, a full two years earlier than Ronaldo.
