Varane left the pitch in tears.
Raphael Varane left the pitch in tears at Stamford Bridge after he had to be substituted with a nasty-looking injury with the World Cup less than a month away.
Varane stayed down after attempting to challenge Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the second half of Manchester United’s trip to west London.
The French international – who was a part of his nation’s 2018 World Cup win in Russia – was seen refusing to leave on a stretcher before walking off the pitch and being replaced by Victor Lindelof.
As he walked towards the tunnel, the defender looked visibly emotional and exchanged some brief words with manager Erik ten Hag before going down to be assessed further.
Ten Hag opted to name the former Real Madrid man in his starting XI alongside Lisandro Martinez as United looked to continue their unbeaten run.
The Red Devils are lacking in central defensive options with club captain Harry Maguire still unavailable as he recovers from an injury he picked up while on international duty with England last month.
No further update has been provided on Varane’s situation, however, there are hopes that the injury isn’t serious and that he will be fit enough to travel to Qatar.
United went into the game knowing a win would see them leapfrog their opponents and into a Champions League spot however, they struggled to break down Graham Potter’s side in a game of chances few and far between.
With fewer than 10 minutes to go, Chelsea were awarded a penalty as Scott McTominay was penalised for handling Armando Broja in the box with Jorginho dispatching the resulting spot-kick.
Casemiro equalised in stoppage time with a header.
