Just say “yes”, Rafa.
Rafa Benitez is a very experienced manager. He’s won the Champions League, two Uefa Cups/Europa Leagues and two Spanish titles. So, it’s not our place to offer managerial advice to the new Real Madrid coach.
But, if we were to, the first thing we’d say is if you’re ever asked if Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world, don’t say: “It’s difficult to say who is the best player in the world, because there are so many players at such a high level at any given time.”
No Rafa, no. You say: “Yes, he’s the best.” It’ll make life a lot easier.
The two time Ballon d’Or winner, and 2008 Fifa World Player of the Year, is notoriously touchy over issues like this, and it’s not worth annoying your best player a few weeks into a new job.
Benitez was speaking at a press conference in Australia, where Madrid are on a pre-season tour, and just kept digging, referring to Ronaldo as “one of the world’s best.”
“I think Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema, James…they’re all up there,” he continued, as Ronaldo pouted and ran out of the room crying, (probably).
“From there one can put one ahead of another as he sees fit, but I think describing Ronaldo as ‘one of the best’ is sufficient.”
“It’s like asking a daughter to choose between her mother and her father; it’s always difficult.”
No it’s not, it’s a banal question that you just say “Yes” to. We admire your honesty Rafa, but we can’t imagine Ronaldo saw it like that.
