Scott Laird is a left back, so his granny won’t go broke
While last night’s FA Cup tie between Manchester United and Preston ended up causing a massive debate about Wayne Rooney antics in the box a rather sweet story from the game has also emerged.
Preston went ahead in the second half thanks to a goal by Scott Laird and the BBC today carry a lovely story about a rather unusual goal bonus he receives from his granny, Pat Smith.
“Every time we scored as kids, she used to give me and my brothers a pound,” the 26-year-old told BBC Somerset. “Even though I’m 26 now, I still carry that tradition on.”
Before you get too concerned about his granny’s bank balance, according to Soccerbase, Laird has scored just 27 goals in his pro career so she won’t be heading to the poor house just yet.
However, Laird was quick to make sure Garnny Smith knew she was on the hook for another payment, and he even tried for an increase due to the importance of the game.
“She was the first person I rang last night and said “I want that pound”. I tried saying I wanted a bit more because it was against Manchester United, but she says that wasn’t in the contract. It’s something I’ll be going on with until the end of my career.”
We sincerely hope that Messi’s and Ronaldo’s respective grandmothers didn’t cut the same deals.
